UNIT 8 EMPLOYING THE WORKFORCE
Unit Summary
The Law, as it relates to site employment, is specific and wide ranging. It will be reflected in the written procedures of your organisation where they relate to employment practice. As a manager employing site workers you need to be fully aware of the requirements as they relate to the Working Rule Agreement and employment law in general. The industry’s standard of Respect for People alongside its various initiatives and the Investors in People programme should be fully considered.
Aims
The unit aims to enable the candidate to:
- identify the required job roles of site workers
- select suitable personnel to fulfil the required roles
- use appropriate recruitment procedures
- ensure correct employment procedures are observed
- implement policies of correct pay and working conditions
- understand the law as it relates to equal opportunities and other employment factors
Outcomes
On successful completion of the unit the candidate will be able to:
- Pre-employment
- decide on future employment needs in terms of numbers and skills
- select the appropriate people to provide the required skills
- understand the law as it relates to employment and equal opportunities
- ensure that the recruitment procedures adopted are those of the organisation and that they comply with current legislation
- Post-employment
- ensure that people are employed and welfare provided in a manner which complies with the requirements of the organisation and current legislation
- ensure that arrangements are in accordance with the Working Rule Agreement
Assessment
The outcomes of this unit will be based on the production of 2 No. assignments or word-processed reports of at least 1000 words that will outline the following:
- The procedures which are in place in the organisation for the employment of workers. Take guidance from the content of the units. Include in the report personal experience of good and bad practice in the employment of workers and highlight issues which are regarded as particularly important.
In addition part of the assessment should include the use of role-play situations which can be assessed as part of the overall assessment process.
