UNIT 7 PLANT AND EQUIPMENT MANAGEMENT
Unit Summary
The candidate is employed in the role of supplying own/hire plant and equipment to sites and is responsible for ensuring that the plant and equipment required on site is supplied and used efficiently, effectively and economically. It must also be safe itself and be used safely by experienced operatives. Candidates may have to consider purchase or hire alternatives and make recommendations. To ensure success candidates must adopt good plant and equipment management procedures.
Aims
The unit aims to enable the candidate to understand the requirements for a safe, productive and efficient service for the supply of plant and equipment to sites.
It includes the cost of plant, its correct deployment and maintenance on site, and the use of suitable systems of control (of use and maintenance for example).
Plant efficiency is monitored whilst the plant is in use on site and feedback is obtained and used to improve future efficiency and effectiveness. The monitoring would cover areas of utilisation and the effectiveness of the plant and equipment itself, for example.
Outcomes
On successful completion of the unit the candidate will be able to assess the requirements for plant and equipment on a project, working with estimators and project staff, and be able to:
- understand how to provide a plant and equipment service which is efficient, productive and safe
- understand how the organisation charges for its plant and be able to derive suitable hire rates
- implement the appropriate control systems for plant and equipment
- deploy plant and equipment in a manner which fully satisfies the site requirements and gives efficient utilisation
- maintain plant and equipment in a manner which is efficient, maximises the utilisation of items, and which keeps the plant safe, and ensures its safe maintenance
- monitor the use and effectiveness of plant and equipment on site, using feedback, and then to act promptly where necessary to obtain the best results.
Assessment
The outcome of this unit will be assessed using an actual project/case study that covers a variety of items of plant equipment. This should include assignments or reports of about 1500 words each that cover the following points and learning outcomes:
- how you operate in the plant and equipment management role in a manner which is productive, efficient, satisfies your customers and ensures safety standards are maintained.
- how you obtain costs and prices as they apply to the plant and equipment you control.
- the management and reporting systems in place in your organisation.
- how you ensure your plant and equipment is deployed properly.
- how you ensure effective maintenance of your plant and equipment
- how you achieve customer satisfaction and overcome problems as they occur. Maintaining a dialogue, being helpful and efficient are examples.
Each section will include relevant data, such as, plant planning schedules, hire and off hire. Examples of good and poor practice should be identified.
