UNIT 6            MATERIALS MANAGEMENT

Unit Summary

The candidate is employed in a role which is supportive of the site management team and is responsible for ensuring that the flow of materials to site suits all requirements.  To ensure this success candidates must adopt the correct procedures for materials purchasing and supply.  These will conform to company organisational procedures.

Aims

The unit aims to enable the candidate to obtain quotations, prepare and place orders and arrange provision of the required materials.  It will also enable the candidate to monitor the progress of material supplies, to seek feedback on adequacy (in terms of quality, quantity and timing for example) and then to act as necessary to ensure ongoing adequacy of supply.

Outcomes

On successful completion of the unit the candidate will be able to:

  1. obtain quotations for materials
  2. prepare and place orders for materials that satisfy all requirements
  3. plan and organise materials provision to suit site requirements
  4. monitor progress of materials supplies to site
  5. obtain feedback on materials supplies and take relevant action with any problems which arise

Assessment

The outcome of this unit will be assessed by development of a portfolio; the basis of the portfolio should be a case study, which should cover the following assessment points:

  • obtaining quotations
  • placing orders
  • ensuring adequate materials supplies, and their quality
  • monitoring material supply, appropriate methods of storage and their use
  • using feedback from others to identify problems and to agree solutions
  • implementing the necessary agreed actions to improve materials supply and use.

Each section should include sample data, such as purchase orders, quotations, memos, wastage factors and will be the candidate’s own work.

Each section will be supported by a written text of some 250 words.  The importance of demonstrating a knowledge of materials supply and use and the issues which arise is necessary.
