UNIT 5 CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY
Unit Summary
Construction site managers are involved in the construction process, site management and office support roles. They must have a good understanding construction technology in the context of building details, manufacturing processes and the construction on site.
Aims
The unit aims to enable the candidate to have an understanding of the technology as it relates to:
- building materials
- building construction
- processes of manufacture and installation
- Building Regulations and other standards
Outcomes
On the successful completion of the unit the candidate will be able to:
- produce drawings or sketches that are clear, unambiguous and comply with appropriate standards including a clear annotation of information
- ensure that materials are properly selected correctly stored, used and installed
- understand the construction of domestic low rise buildings
- relate construction work to the appropriate building regulations, codes of practice and other legislation
Assessment
The outcome of this unit will be assessed on the production of:
- 2 No. word-processed reports of some 1500 words (each) which will demonstrate the candidate’s knowledge of construction, construction materials, how they are used, and the effect of Building Regulations and other requirements on the construction process. Drawings, sketches and other data relevant to the candidate’s experience should be included in the reports; and also
- A 2 hour open book examination, or end of unit test, to assess the candidates’ ability and knowledge of this Unit. The examination should also include the provision of appropriate drawings and sketches.
Candidates must show a good grasp of construction technology, construction materials and how to properly programme, execute and complete construction work.
