UNIT 3            CONSTRUCTION METHODS AND PLANNING

 

Unit Summary

This unit is about the methods used to carry out construction, installation or maintenance work, the resources used for various types of work, and the time taken to carry out various operations.  As construction managers, candidates will need this knowledge to be able to plan and carry out any work successfully. This work is often carried out in conjunction with other members of the contractor’s staff.

Aims

The unit aims to enable the candidate to understand the construction methods and the planning that is relevant to the work in which the candidate is involved, particularly to:

  • understand the tender documentation and its contents together with the associated contractual information
  • prepare a work programme
  • identify the different methods which are used to carry out various parts of the work process and how work methods vary when circumstances change
  • identify the resources that are required for the various methods of work
  • select appropriate resources for the various techniques
  • use methods of working that are safe.

Outcomes

On successful completion of the unit the candidate will be able to:

  • assess  the tender documentation and its contents to guide the programming and resourcing of projects
  • prepare a work programme taking note of the relevant tender considerations
  • select construction methods that are appropriate to the work required
  • verify that appropriate resources are provided to ensure that the methods used are successful
  • review the progress of the works
  • ensure that all work is carried out safely.

Assessment

The outcomes of this unit will be assessed on the production of 2 No. word-processed reports which should detail:

  1. the programming methods with which the candidate is familiar
  2. the work methods with which the candidate is familiar
  3. the resources needed to carry out the various tasks
  4. the time taken to carry out various tasks
  5. how technological methods change to suit varying conditions
  6. the steps taken to ensure all work is carried out safely and in compliance with the regulations

The report should contain at least 1500 words each and should also include appropriate plans, drawings or sketches as necessary to indicate various points.

Of critical importance is the need for candidates to show a good grasp of the work methods they employ, that they can carry them out safely, change them if necessary, and complete the required work successfully.
