UNIT 15 SITE ORGANISATION
Unit Summary
This unit is about setting up the site in a manner which will enable the proposed work to be carried out successfully and to put in place the control and communication systems required to support this. Managers on site carry out this function for each contract, using the systems of their business and their knowledge of the required contract works.
Aims
The unit aims to enable the candidate to:
- receive and understand the tender documentation and the contract requirements
- visit the site and plan site preparation
- consider the requirements for health and safety during the on site work
- brief the construction team on the work requirements
- finalise the site establishment
- set up the necessary communication systems
Outcomes
On successful completion of the unit the candidate will be able to:
- understand the contractual requirements of the tender
- make a site visit and note those factors that affect the layout of the site and the implications for the work that follows
- use relevant safety, health and welfare knowledge to identify the risks involved, to carry out risk assessments, and prepare the work phase health and safety plan.
- ensure that the site team is properly briefed on all work requirements.
- agree the site layout and the arrangements for the control of the work.
- put in place adequate systems to provide or receive information from all sources relevant to the contract.
Assessment
The outcome of this unit will be based on the production of a report covering the data for a contract which the candidate has been involved with. It should include details of: -
- the project
- a site visit report
- an appreciation of the hazards and risks which were encountered
- a team briefing and allocation of duties for the execution of the work
- The communication systems which were used.
The report should be of about 1500 words long and should clearly detail the arrangements made for setting up the work site and the systems.
- It should be word processed and include the relevant data used on the site. Details of the site visit, minutes of the contract start-up meeting and any organisational data would be examples of this. Examples of good and bad practice, and any lessons learned, should be included.
