UNIT 10 Estimating and Tendering
Unit Summary
This unit is about calculating the contractor’s costs involved during the preparation of estimates and then using this information to complete the tender. Construction managers need a detailed understanding of how the estimates of cost have been calculated. Construction managers are then able to use and identify the resources contained within the contractor’s tender to plan and execute the work on site.
Aims
The unit aims to enable the candidate to calculate construction costs using basic cost data, other information and labour outputs that have been retrieved from the feedback of previous projects as well as other sources of cost information.
Outcomes
On successful completion of the unit the candidate will be able to:
- understand the need to be fully appraised of the contract documents including the need for a site visit
- calculate the costs of resources
- calculate the costs measured items of work
- identify the contractor’s costs associated with nominated and other types of subcontractors
- consider the conditions of contract and their implication on the contractor’s costs
- assess site on-costs and head office overheads charges and profit
- describe and evaluate the different forms of tendering and procurement used within the construction industry.
Assessment
The outcome of this unit will be assessed on the production of:
- the production of 2 No. courseworks covering the learning outcomes of the Unit. Part of the assessment should also include the formal production of an estimate or tender.
The range items should be priced from first principles and using an analysis of the resources required.
The candidate needs to demonstrate:
- a knowledge of the process involved
- an awareness of the resources used and the various allowances made to different resource prices
- an understanding how the nature of the project, the conditions of contract and the conditions under which the work will be carried out affect a contractor’s costs and therefore his estimate or tender.
