Unit 5:    Planning of buildings, integrated services and associated external works - Level 3

Unit Summary

This unit concerns the knowledge and skills required to demonstrate an understanding of:

  • the techniques used by architects to develop design solutions to meet a clients brief and regulatory standards
  • the principles and applications of building services systems and their impact on the design of a building and to the development as a whole
  • the need to co-ordinate the planning and installation of building services within the total design and construction process
  • the range and impact of external works that may be required for a residential development.

This unit is divided into outcomes which may be studied separately.  Alternatively you may use occupational evidence for accreditation of each outcome, separately or collectively.

Aims

This unit aims to enable the candidate to:

  • understand the responsibilities of personnel in the design and planning of buildings and integration of external works and how technology can be used in those processes
  • develop a working knowledge of the use of planning and regulatory controls and procedures for planning and design of buildings, integrated services and associated external works
  • become familiar with a range of integrated services and external works used in building development designs.

Outcomes

On successful completion of the unit the candidate will be able to:

  • recognise and describe what is "successful design" and explain how new technology can contribute to the achievement of this
  • describe the roles and responsibilities of the personnel involved with the planning of buildings integrated services and associated external works
  • explain the purpose of planning and building regulation control and the procedures for submission of designs for planning and building regulation approval
  • assess the design and installation implications for integrating services into a building development design
  • describe a range of external works associated with low-rise residential developments
    • select a suitable site for a low-rise residential development and prepare a report outlining procedures and constraints associated with the planning, services integration and external works for the development.

    Assessment

The outcomes of this unit will be assessed on the production of a portfolio of work demonstrating an understanding of the design and planning process for a new low-rise residential development.  The portfolio must include:

    • a feasibility report evaluating the suitability of the site for the stated purpose,
    • information relating to the design and planning of buildings, services and external works,
    • details of the roles and responsibilities of personnel involved in the design and planning process,
    • annotated sketches demonstrating aesthetics of design and the integration of the development into the natural environment,
    • a completed planning application or building regulation approval form for the development.

The portfolio must contain written materials, diagrams, graphs, charts, photographs, pro-forma and calculations with a proportion of each produced using new technology.

This unit is assessed through a combination of your portfolio work and a written paper comprising short answer questions referenced to a test specification covering each of the six outcomes of study.
