Unit 4: Site surveying and setting-out procedures - Level 3
This course is one unit of the Advanced professional certificate in construction. After completion of this course students will be awarded a unit certificate. For details of the full award please click here.
This course is offered on Wednesday evenings from 5.30 to 8.0 pm over 12 weeks, one week full time once every term as well as distance learning.
Entry requirements: Adequate knowledge of English and basic knowledge of Maths
Course start time: The beginning of each term.
.
UNIT SUMMARY
This unit concerns the knowledge and skills required to demonstrate an understanding of the techniques used when:
-
collecting data using linear measurement
-
determining height and controlling level
-
collecting data using angular measurement
-
producing scaled drawings from data collected during a topographical site survey
-
undertaking internal and external building surveys, producing associated drawings and preparing dilapidation reports
-
setting-out buildings and associated building services.
-
This unit is divided into ten outcomes which may be studied separately. Alternatively, you may use occupational evidence for accreditation of each outcome, separately or collectively.
.
Aims
This unit aims to enable candidates to:
- understand a range of site surveying and setting-out terminology
- understand a range of surveying and setting-out techniques using appropriate equipment
- undertake a range surveying and setting-out tasks
- produce drawings, reports and setting out information from field studies.
.Outcomes
On successful completion of the unit the candidate will be able to:
-
undertake an internal OR external building survey, by recording information related to dimensions, form, fabric and condition of the building and its services
.
Assessment
The outcomes of this unit will be assessed on the production of a portfolio of work demonstrating an understanding of terminology and techniques associated with linear measurement, angular measurement, height control, site surveys, building surveys and setting-out. the portfolio of work must include:
- field, angle and level booking data recorded during topographical studies,
- a set of scaled drawings based on the results of your survey,
- field data recorded during an internal or external building survey,
- a set of scaled drawings based on the results of your surveys,
- a dilapidation report produced from the information recorded in the field,
- setting out information for building works from supplied information.
The portfolio must contain calculations, written material, diagrams, sketches and charts.
This unit is assessed through a combination of your portfolio work and a written paper comprising short answer questions referenced to a test specification covering each of the study outcomes.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The course provides you an opportunity to use a number of surveying equipment to practice setting out, surveying and leveling techniques. There is extensive practical exercises to give you fluency in use of EDM (Total station), laser level and automatic level.
There are a number of exercises listed below;
-
Setting out techniques, establishing control points on new and existing jobs
-
Transferring grid lines and datum's to upper floors
-
Establishing datum's on sites using survey drawings
-
Establishing grid lines and coordinate system in small, medium and large sites
-
Setting out piles
-
Controlling verticality of low and high rise buildings
-
Setting out curves, straight lines, lines parallel and at an angle to existing buildings
-
Measuring heights of inaccessible objects
-
-
Avoiding typical errors on site
-
Checking instruments for calibration and malfunction
For those students who would like to work as a construction site engineer either as a free lance for agencies or for their companies we offer extra lessons on advanced topics.
Further Advanced level topics
Checking lift shafts for plumb and position
-
Measuring volumes
-
Reading and understanding general arrangement layouts, sections and elevations
-
Traverse exercises
-
Reading and understanding Reinforcement drawings, bending schedules and shape codes
-
Calculating distance to remote objects
-
Establishing control system in jobs with no grids or control stations
-
Advanced methods of establishing lost grid lines
