Advanced Professional Certificate in construction (City and Guilds)

UNIT 3:    Materials technology - Level 3

UNIT SUMMARY

This unit concerns the knowledge and skills required to demonstrate an understanding of:

  • the origin and sources of materials used for building and civil engineering works, how these are obtained and processed
  • the properties, characteristics and general behaviour in use of materials
  • the application and use of building materials in a specific construction context using supplied information
  • standard testing procedures to confirm the properties and behaviour of materials in use.

This unit is divided into six outcomes which may be studied separately.  Alternatively, you may use occupational evidence for accreditation of each outcome, separately or collectively.

AIMS

This unit aims to enable the candidate to:

  • gain an understanding of the origin and sources of naturally occurring and processed materials and of how these are obtained and manufactured for use in the construction industry whilst assessing the environmental considerations associated with the selection of materials for construction applications
  • assess the properties and characteristics of building materials for use and compatibility and to be able to apply this knowledge to specific situations with reference to British Standard test procedures for building materials
  • become familiar with the requirements of materials and of the standard tests commonly used in the construction industry.

OUTCOMES

On successful completion of the unit the candidate will be able to:

  • explain the origins and sources of naturally occurring and processed materials and how these are obtained and manufactured for use in the construction industry
  • assess environmental considerations associated with the selection of materials for construction applications
  • assess the properties and characteristics of building materials for use and compatibility and apply this knowledge to specific situations
  • use sources of reference to confirm British Standard test procedures for building materials
  • undertake standard tests on materials in accordance with British Standard test procedures and evaluate results to confirm suitability of the materials for use
  • evaluate the properties of materials from supplied data and experiment and compare results to requirements of use and minimum specified requirements.

This unit is assessed through a combination of your portfolio work and a written paper comprising short answer questions referenced to a test specification covering all of the study outcomes.
