UNIT 2:   Building technology for low-rise developments - Level 3

UNIT SUMMARY

This unit concerns the knowledge and skills required to demonstrate an understanding of:

  • the technology, techniques and processes for construction of the substructure, superstructure and internal and external finishes for a building
  • the technology, techniques and processes for construction of the external works to a building development

This unit is divided into six outcomes which may be studied separately.  Alternatively, candidates may use occupational evidence for accreditation of each outcome, separately or collectively.

AIMS

This unit aims to enable the candidate to:

    • acquire an understanding of the stages involved in progressing proposals for a building development from stages of inception to completion
    • understand the concepts, principles and practices involved with the creation of a building
    • appraise alternative ways in which substructure, superstructure, finishes and external works may be constructed
    • make informed judgements as to appropriate forms of low rise building construction for an identified development
    • understand how the extent of external works varies from site to site and appraise the external works required for an identified development

    OUTCOMES

On successful completion of the unit the candidate will be able to:

    1) identify and categorise the work undertaken at each stage of a building contract from inception to completion and feedback

    2) describe work undertaken at the site preparation and groundwork stages of construction

    3) describe the construction of the main components of substructure work

    4) describe the construction of the main components of superstructure work

    5) describe the principal internal and external finishes and their applications to building elements

    6) assess the requirements of external works needed to support a building development.

This unit is assessed through a combination of portfolio work and a written paper comprising short answer questions referenced to a test specification covering each of the six study outcomes.
