Advanced Professional Certificate in construction (City and Guilds)

Unit 13:  Applications of computer based technology in construction -
                 Level 3

Unit Summary

This unit concerns the knowledge and skills required to demonstrate an understanding of:

  • how construction products are designed using new technology
  • methods of production, use of labour and the skill and knowledge requirements of the workforce, when using new technology
  • how new technology has influenced the speed and efficiency of design and construction processes for projects in the built environment
  • the systems used to control the quality and finish of products produced using new technology
  • the economics of producing designs and manufactured products using new technology.

This unit is divided into ten outcomes which may be studied separately.  Alternatively, you may use occupational evidence for accreditation of each outcome, separately or collectively.

Aims

This unit aims to enable the candidate to:

  • acquire an understanding of the applications of computer based technology in construction
  • understand hardware and software elements of computer based technology used in construction
  • demonstrate the ability to use and apply the knowledge and understanding of computer based technology in construction.

Outcomes

On successful completion of the unit the candidate will be able to:

  • explain how computer based technology is applied in construction
  • describe the requirements of computer systems used for design and manufacture
  • distinguish between the hardware and software components associated with computer based technology
  • explain how programmable logic controllers are used
  • explain how switches and transducers are used
  • interpret artificial language, terminology and systems used for programming and instructing machines
  • explain the use of CAD and CAM for designing and controlling the production of components used in construction processes
  • explain the use of CNC machines used for the manufacture of construction components
  • produce computer generated drawings for EITHER a manufactured component/fitting for construction OR a small building/room design
  • programme a CNC machine for the production of a manufactured component/fitting from an outline brief of clients requirements.

Assessment

The outcomes of this unit will be assessed through a combination of a practical demonstration of understanding and ability in the requirements of the outcomes as well as a portfolio of work also demonstrating an understanding of the applications of computer based technology in construction.

The portfolio of work will include:

  • a report detailing the use and application of computer based technology in construction,
  • information relating to the requirements for production for using computer based technology in construction including the use of an appropriately skilled and knowledgeable workforce,
  • examples demonstrating the required understanding of computer aided draughting techniques.

The portfolio must contain written material, drawings, diagrams, charts and sketches.

Practical assessment will be made including:

  • assessment of the appropriate level of understanding of the use of CAD,
  • assessment of the appropriate level of demonstration in programming a CNC machine.

This unit is assessed through a combination of practical demonstration, your portfolio work and a written paper comprising short answer questions referenced to a test specification covering each of the ten study outcomes.
