Unit 11: Focus on design and production - Level 3
Unit Summary
This unit provides an opportunity for you to develop as an able practitioner, previously acquired skills associated with a master craftsperson working to professional standards. the unit contains the knowledge and skills required to demonstrate an understanding of how to design and produce a component for a building or provide a construction related service, to a brief developed with a client to satisfy a particular requirement. Study of this unit will provide opportunities to:
- work to an agreed brief to generate and evaluate a range of ideas to achieve a professional outcome acceptable for a client
- present ideas and provide feedback and recommendations to take an idea forward
- produce an end product or provide a service to a developed brief
- use innovative ideas and a range of skills in producing a product or providing a service
- work with a high level of technical skill to achieve the required outcome
- evaluate the end product or service against the brief, in association with the client.
This unit is divided into eight outcomes which may be studied separately. Alternatively, you may use occupational evidence for accreditation of each outcome, separately or collectively.
Aims
This unit aims to enable the candidate to:
- identify, select and use a range of resources and tools used in design and production
- understand and apply knowledge of financial and technical considerations required in construction into design and production procedures
- display an understanding of how to meet the requirements of a client including initial design, through alteration to final production in a safe and practicable way
- use a range of skills to apply the principles of craftspersonship including those required to evaluate whether the quality and specification needs of the client have been met in all stages from initial design to final production.
Outcomes
On successful completion of the unit the candidate will be able to:
- collaborate effectively and harmoniously with a client to generate a working brief agreed by both parties
- generate a range of alternative ideas and/or suggestions which satisfy the brief
- explore, develop and record the viability of financial, technical and time constraints in being able to convert the design ideas into a finished product or service
- present a range of ideas to a client, negotiate a decision and advise on the strategies needed to carry forward the design to production or completion of the identified service
- produce a risk assessment for the work to be carried out
- quantify and obtain materials, tools and equipment necessary to produce a product or provide a service
- apply the principles of craftspersonship, excellence, adaptability and innovation in producing the product or providing the service safely
- evaluate the completed end product or service against the brief, in association with the client.
Assessment
You will need to produce a portfolio of work demonstrating the ability to design and produce to professional standards EITHER a product OR component for a building OR a construction related service. The portfolio of work must include:
- information supporting the development of a brief agreeable to both a client and a craftsperson,
- a range of design ideas and a recommendation to take ONE design idea forward into production,
- schedules of physical resources needed to progress the identified work against a practical time scale,
- a risk assessment and safe working procedure for the task,
- a statement identifying the range of craft skills demonstrated in producing the product, component or construction related service.
The portfolio of work must contain text, notes, clients' brief, sketches, schedules, photographs and a skills statement. A completed product OR component for a building OR details of the construction related service must be provided.
This unit is assessed through a combination of your portfolio work and a written paper comprising short answer questions referenced to a test specification covering each of the eight outcomes of study.
