UNIT 1:   Craft supervision, building legislation and health and safety in construction - Level 3

 

UNIT SUMMARY

This unit concerns the knowledge and skills required to demonstrate an understanding of:

  • the craft supervisor's role and responsibilities with regard to the organisation of human, plant and material resources on a construction si
  • the need to have effective communication systems between all work groups involved in construction activities on site and in the office
  • the background knowledge related to legislation governing the planning, design and construction control of building
  • the background knowledge related to current health and safety legislation applicable to the construction industry

AIMS

The unit aims to enable the candidate to:

  • understand the elements of a supervisor's role related to the policies and procedures of an employer's organisation
  • develop an understanding and the practical skills for an effective communication system between members of a construction and supervisory team
  • understand the supervisor's role and responsibilities related to the effective use of human, plant and material resources
  • understand matters of human resourcing relating to recruitment, training and education, legislation, the role of trade unions and working rule agreements
  • understand elements of plant resourcing including plant selection, outputs, costs and economies
  • understand elements of materials resourcing relating to physical and performance properties, storage, costs and economies
  • gain an overall understanding of resource planning, monitoring and control
  • acquire a practical knowledge of legislation related to planning, design and construction control of buildings.

ASSESSMENT

This unit is assessed through a combination of your portfolio work and a written paper comprising short answer questions referenced to a test specification covering each of the six outcomes of study.

The portfolio of work must include:

  • information detailing the supervisor's role and responsibilities related to policies and procedures of an employer's organisation,
  • explanations of the elements needed for effective communication with members of the construction team,
  • descriptions of the supervisor's role and responsibilities related to the effective use of human, plant and material resources,
  • a report identifying the principal requirements contained in legislation related to the planning, design and construction control of buildings,
  • a report identifying the principal requirements contained in legislation related to the health safety and welfare of members of the building team.

The portfolio must contain written material, diagrams, graphs, charts, photographs, pro-forma and calculations.

The evidence that you produce in completing a portfolio for this unit may contribute to a business' and individuals' training plan, Investors in People, on-the-job training and assessment, approved industry apprenticeship scheme, National traineeship and Modern Apprenticeship.
